What will happen after Brexit?

It is anticipated that if,

There is a withdrawal agreement and a transition period: your UK driving licence will stay valid at least until 31 December 2020. Going forward, negotiations between the UK and EU will take part in regards to a mutual agreement for the validity of licences.  The Department for Transport fully expects there to be agreement on this.

The UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019 without an agreement: your UK licence will be invalid for use in the EU unless it is accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP).

For those of you who are permanent residents and wish to change your UK licence for a French licence, it is strongly advised to do so before 29th March 2019 as there is a possibility that you may be required to take a driving test to obtain your French licence.
